Leather Candles & Scent Notes

Leather usually reads as smoky and slightly bitter, with a warm, animalic softness underneath. It suggests a worn jacket or a car interior.

smoky dry suede animalic warm

What leather smells like

Leather ranges from raw to refined. Birchy, tarry leather is rugged and scorched. Suede-like leather is soft and powdery. Sweetened with vanilla or amber, it becomes polished leather goods. Tobacco takes it into a study; rose or iris dress it up, elegant and a little daring.

What to look for

  • When it falls flat. A bad leather smells of plastic or rubber, with no supple warmth. Lean too hard on the smoky side and it goes harsh and tarry.
  • The label trap. “Leather accord” and “leather” on a note list both describe an impression of leather, and this page counts the two as one.

Perfumes and colognes lean on leather to give woody, floral and tobacco blends a dark edge. Candles aim for a library or study atmosphere with it, usually alongside tobacco.
